The research center PRHLT at Universitat Politècnica de València, in the context of the MISMIS project on Misinformation and Miscommunication (FAKEnHATE), is organising a series of virtual talks about hate speech online.

On Wednesday 10th of February 2021, at 11.00 CET, Sara Tonelli will give the second-last talk of the series, whose title is “Addressing the Grand Challenges of Online Hate Research” and that will virtually continue the seminar held by Dr. Joni Salminen on 26th of January.

In the last talk of the MISMIS series, Dr. Joni Salminen presented four grand challenges that, in his view, should be addressed when dealing with online hate speech, mentioning among others the focus only on detection, the problem of subjectivity and interpretation, the lack of user studies. Sara’s talk intends to be a continuation of the previous one, addressing some of the above challenges and presenting some possible solutions that we have recently implemented. In particular, the talk will describe the involvement of NGOs as domain experts for the design of hate speech monitoring and counter-narrative tools, as well as the revision of hate speech annotation practices, taking into account context and annotators’ disagreement.
